Are you a woman in your 40's who eats a diet full of plants and is still waging war on your taste buds at night when the sun goes down?
You eat right all day, but the sweet tooth-monster comes alive in you at sunset.
Worry not, here's got 5 clever hacks to beat those late-night cravings and continue on your plant-based path.
1. Feed The Beast (Before It Feeds Upon You)
Okay ladies, we can be real here; when you are not eating enough throughout the day that is why your stomach turns into a ravenous monster by dinner.
Your Stomach says, "Hello? Remember me? Ive Been Waiting All Day For Some Attention!!"
The solution? Pamper your belly throughout the day. Load up on nutrient-dense, plant-powered meals that'll keep your inner cookie monster at bay. Think colorful salads, hearty grain bowls, and enough avocado to make a millennial jealous.
One of my favorite ways to make sure that you’re eating enough is to track your food in Cronometer for a day to check. This food tracking app will track nutrients in the foods to give you a really good picture of how complete your diet really is in terms of nutrition and vitamins and minerals, which is truly what matters.
2. The Great Dental Distraction
Here's a sneaky trick that'll also make your dentist proud: brush and floss your teeth about 30 minutes after dinner. It's like telling your mouth and stomach, "Sorry, we're closed for business!" Plus, who wants to ruin that minty fresh feeling with a late-night snack?
Why go through all the work of brushing and flossing their teeth again just because you wanted to eat one bite of that plant-based dessert. Adding in this extra step will make it a little bit more difficult for you to reach for that midnight sweet.
3. Snack Smarter, Not Harder
When the cravings hit, and you're eyeing that tub of vegan ice cream like it's the last oasis in a desert, reach for these smart snacks instead:
- Dates with Raw Almond Butter and a sprinkle of Celtic Sea Salt: Nature's candy, minus the guilt trip. This will help you satisfy your sweet and salty cravings.
- Dried Fruit: Because sometimes you need to trick your brain into thinking you're eating gummy bears.
- Banana Nice Cream- use a high-speed blender and blend up some delicious healthy ice cream instead of store-bought containers.
4. Patience, Grasshopper
Remember when you thought kale tasted like dirt? Now you're probably sprinkling it on your breakfast like it's fairy dust. Your taste buds are on a journey, and like any good road trip, there might be a few detours. Be patient with yourself as your palate adapts to your new plant-powered lifestyle. Soon, you'll be craving carrots like they're chocolate.
Remember that it can take time to adjust and adapt to new flavors. But as you start to change the internal terrain of your gut microbiome, you will start to notice changes in the types of foods that you’re craving.
5. The Uninvited Guests
If you're still feeling like you could eat an entire garden at midnight, it might be time to consider some unwanted tenants in your gut. That's right, we're talking parasites. Don't worry, it's more common than you think – think of it as having very tiny, very hungry roommates. A parasite cleanse might be in order. We deworm our pets so it makes sense that we should also be deworming ourselves.
Personally, I do a deep parasite cleanse once a year.If you’re curious about eliminating parasites from your body, I would recommend looking for a functional or a holistic health practitioner who has proven success in evicting those freeloaders and helping you reclaim your gut real estate.
Remember, ladies, transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle is a journey, not a sprint. Some days you'll feel like a goddess of green, other days you might find yourself arguing with a head of lettuce. But with these tips, you'll be mastering those evening cravings and waking up feeling fresh as a daisy – or should we say, fresh as a kale leaf?
So, the next time those late-night munchies try to derail your progress, show them who's boss.
Your body will thank you!
