Protein Propaganda: The Massive Lie Keeping You From Optimal Health

Awwwwww, the P word. As a high raw vegan eater for the past 4 years, I have a very interesting relationship with this word. Let's dive into the raw truth about protein and challenge some common misconceptions that many of us face on this journey.

We live in a society that's obsessed with protein. You can't escape seeing "high protein this" and "make sure you eat your protein with every meal" everywhere you look. But what if I told you that everything we thought we knew about protein might be wrong?

Understanding Protein's Role in the Body

Before we challenge the status quo, let's acknowledge that protein is indeed important. It plays a crucial role in many bodily processes, including bone health and digestion. Enzymes, which regulate practically all reactions in the body, are proteins. These biological molecules are found within cells and are essential for our survival.

So yes, protein is vital. But here's the kicker: we might not need as much as we've been led to believe, especially from animal sources. Let me take you on my journey of discovery.

From Overweight to Nutrition Advocate

Just before turning 30, I found myself 41 pounds overweight, constantly sick, and hating what I saw in the mirror everyday.

Maybe you've been there too?

I decided to make a change, starting with daily walks and tracking everything I ate. As the pounds melted away, people started asking for advice.

But I didn't want to give advice without understanding the science behind it. This drive led me to complete Precision Nutrition's Level One certification. I learned the conventional wisdom about protein – its importance for muscles, hair, nails, and hundreds of bodily functions.

I followed this advice religiously, consuming 100-160 grams of protein daily at just 110 pounds body weight.

My Gut Health Wake-Up Call

But here's where things get interesting. I got curious about holistic health and decided to take a gut microbiome test. I honestly thought this test result would come back saying I had fantastic gut health, but it was the complete opposite.

I had a horrible gut health score for my microbiome, and it said I was borderline leaky gut.

I was having so much protein fermentation in my body because I was eating way too much protein, causing a lot of inflammation and issues in my gut.

The crazy thing was that I didn't feel it and I couldn't see any of this on the outside. I was doing what I was told, what I was trained to do, and it was putting my body in a position to lead me down chronic health problems with my gut, which is the start of most major issues in the body.

Embracing Raw Foods and Rethinking Protein

Enter the raw food diet and Dr. Robert Morse's "Detox Miracle Sourcebook." When I first read that we shouldn't eat more than 10% protein, I almost threw the book away. There's no way that this was correct, right? I had never heard of eating that low of protein before in my diet.

But as I dug deeper, I learned that a lot of people are eating too much protein. We're eating protein based on our body weight, not on the amount of muscle we have in our body. The lean muscle mass number is what we should be basing our protein needs off, not our total body weight.

The Results Speak for Themselves

Let me share some results from my journey on a raw food diet with moderate protein intake:

  • My lean body mass increased from 83.8 pounds to 85.8 pounds in just 34 days - that's 2 lbs of muscle or a 2.39% increase!

  • Body fat percentage dropped from 21.8% to 17.9% in 8 weeks

  • I lost about 3% of my total body weight in 6 weeks

  • My basal metabolic rate increased, meaning I'm burning more calories at rest

  • Most importantly, I saw a notable reduction in visceral fat - the dangerous fat that surrounds your organs and is linked to numerous health issues

And I achieved all this while consuming only 65 to 90 grams of protein daily – much less than my previous high-protein diet.

Thriving on Raw Food Protein

If you're worried about getting enough protein on a raw food diet, don't be! I eat a variety of raw foods and vegetables that provide about 50 grams of protein daily. I supplement with raw food protein powder or spirulina and focus on higher protein intake around workouts.

Some of my favorite high-protein raw foods include zucchini noodles, jackfruit, alfalfa sprouts, lentil sprouts, and homemade nut milks. There are so many delicious options!

Debunking the Myths

My experience has completely challenged the idea that we need animal protein or high protein diets to gain muscle. I've built more muscle on this raw food diet than I ever did eating animal products.

But it's not just about muscle gain – it's about overall vitality and well-being.

The transformation I've experienced is like night and day. I'm not just feeling better; I'm thriving in a way I never thought possible. It's as if I've tapped into a wellspring of energy and vitality that I didn't even know existed.

The Unexpected Benefits

Beyond muscle gain, transitioning to a lower-protein, raw food diet has helped me overcome various health issues, including iron anemia, hypothyroidism, chronic pain from a neck injury, anxiety, depression, and poor night vision. But that's just the beginning.

What's truly remarkable is how I'm feeling and looking better as I age – a noticable contrast to many of my peers who are slowing down or struggling with health problems. I'm experiencing an upward trajectory in my overall well-being.

Each morning, I wake up refreshed and energized, ready to tackle the day. My skin has a healthy glow without any products, my hair is vibrant, and I have unprecedented mental clarity. It's not just about avoiding illness; it's about reaching new heights of wellness I didn't know were possible.

My energy levels are consistently high throughout the day, eliminating the need for caffeine or sugary snacks to combat afternoon slumps. This increased vitality has boosted my productivity, creativity, and zest for life.

Moreover, my recovery time after workouts has significantly decreased. I can push myself harder in fitness routines and bounce back faster, without the soreness and fatigue I used to experience on a high-protein, animal-based diet.

Perhaps most importantly, I feel a sense of harmony and balance within my body that extends to my mental and emotional states. It's as if every cell is working in perfect synchronicity, contributing to a holistic sense of well-being I've never experienced before.

Your Raw Food Protein Journey

While some in the raw food world dismiss protein entirely, it's crucial to ensure we're getting enough for basic bodily functions. The key is understanding that we're focusing on amino acids.

Here's a little-known fact that might blow your mind: every single fruit and vegetable contains amino acids – the building blocks of protein. Yes, you heard that right!

The key to meeting your protein needs on a raw vegan diet isn't about obsessing over protein content in everything you eat, but rather embracing variety.

By enjoying a wide array of colorful fruits and veggies throughout your week, you're not just getting a rainbow of nutrients – you're also effortlessly hitting your protein goals.

It's nature's way of ensuring we get everything we need, wrapped up in delicious, raw packages.

Are you ready to challenge everything you thought you knew about protein? It's time to listen to your body, embrace the power of raw foods, and discover a new level of health and vitality.

Remember, every journey is personal – what worked for me might need tweaking for you. But one thing's for sure: you don't need mountains of animal protein to build the body of your dreams and feel amazing at any age. The proof is in the (raw, vegan) pudding!

Don't settle for feeling "okay" or "not bad for your age." You have the potential to feel vibrant, pain-free, energized, and truly alive.

This raw food journey isn't just about what you eat – it's about unlocking a level of health and vitality you might never have thought possible.
