Raw Food at the Office: Thriving on Plants in a 9-to-5 World

As a plant-based woman over 40, navigating the 9-5 office life while maintaining a raw food lifestyle can seem daunting. You may get looks or comments from others, you can’t seem to eat the same food that they cater for everyone and you always seem to be left out.

But fear not!

With a little creativity and preparation, you can not only survive but thrive in your 9-to-5 world. Here's how I've managed to stick to my raw food choices since returning to the office full time again post-pandemic as a raw foodie.

Use these tips to help you feel confident eating raw plant based foods in your office.

Embrace Your Unique Diet

The key to success is owning your dietary choices with unwavering confidence.

Remember, your health journey is deeply personal and incredibly powerful. By standing firm in your decisions, you'll find that co-workers often become curious rather than critical.

As you get further into this lifestyle, you'll notice it becomes easier with each passing day. Your vibrant energy and high level of health will naturally draw attention, sparking interest in those around you.

Over time, you'll experience a remarkable shift: coworkers will stop questioning why you eat this way and start asking how they can do it too. Embrace this transformation! As you grow healthier year after year, others will take notice of your glowing vitality.

Tip #1: Master the Art of Meal Prep

One of the keys to success as a raw foodie in the corporate world is mastering the art of meal prep.

Here are some game-changing strategies:

  • Wash and chop your lettuce and salad ingredients in advance. Store them in airtight containers to keep them fresh throughout the week.

  • Make plant-based milks on the weekend. Homemade almond or cashew milk can be a delicious addition to your office smoothies or chia puddings.

  • If you're into sprouting, start your sprouts a few days before you need them. They'll be ready just in time for your workweek lunches.

  • Prepare portable snacks like chopped fruit or dehydrated fruit chips for easy grabbing on busy mornings.

With these prep strategies, you'll always have raw, plant-based options ready to go, making it easier to stick to your diet even on the busiest days.

Tip #2: Bring Aromatic Fruits

One of my favorite strategies is bringing delicious-smelling ripe fruits to work. The enticing aroma naturally piques curiosity, opening the door for conversations about your lifestyle. Jackfruit, Mangos, Melons, or any exotic fruit typically gets my co-workers asking me if they can have some.

Pro tip: Always bring enough to share!

Tip #3: Be the Office Trendsetter

Don't be afraid to introduce your coworkers to the world of raw, plant-based eating. After sharing my fruits regularly, I was asked to organize a "Fruit Fest" featuring 21 different varieties for everyone to try. It was a hit!

You can start small by bringing extra portions of your raw snacks to share during coffee breaks. Try organizing a "Raw Food Friday" where you bring a different raw dish each week, like zucchini noodles with sun-dried tomato pesto or raw energy balls.

For bigger events, consider hosting a raw food potluck or a "Make Your Own Salad Bar" day, where you provide a variety of raw toppings and let colleagues create their own masterpieces.

These interactive experiences not only showcase the diversity and deliciousness of raw foods but also create fun, team-building opportunities that everyone can enjoy.

Tip #4: Create Engaging Food Events

Building on the success of the Fruit Fest, I organized a Smoothie Day. I prepared four delicious raw smoothies that my colleagues adored. These events not only showcase the deliciousness of raw foods but also foster a sense of community in the office.

To make your Smoothie Day a success, offer a variety of flavors to cater to different tastes. Label each smoothie with its ingredients and health benefits to educate your colleagues.

Consider turning it into an interactive experience by setting up a "build-your-own-smoothie" station. Provide a selection of pre-cut fruits, leafy greens, plant-based milk alternatives, and superfood add-ins like chia seeds or spirulina. This not only makes the event more engaging but also allows colleagues to experiment with raw food combinations they might not have tried before.

Pro tip: Prep your smoothie ingredients the night before and bring your blender to work for ultimate freshness! And always have some extra ingredients on hand – your smoothies might be so popular that you'll need to make a second batch!

Tip #5: Navigate Work Meetings with Ease

Always reach out to meeting organizers in advance about your dietary needs. This proactive approach ensures you're not left hungry during long meetings and demonstrates your professionalism.

Here's how to handle it effectively:

  • Timing is key: Contact the organizer at least 48 hours before the meeting. This gives them ample time to make arrangements.

  • Be clear and specific: Explain that you follow a raw food diet and provide examples of what you can eat. For instance, "I follow a raw food diet for health reasons. Fresh fruits, raw vegetable salads, and nuts are great options for me."

  • Offer suggestions: Propose easy-to-provide options like a fruit platter, raw veggie sticks with hummus, or a simple green salad with olive oil and lemon on the side.

  • Volunteer to help: If appropriate, offer to bring a shareable raw dish. This can be a great way to introduce colleagues to delicious raw options.

  • Follow up: Send a gentle reminder the day before the meeting. This can prevent your request from being overlooked in the hustle of meeting preparations.

  • Be gracious: Always express appreciation for any accommodations made, no matter how small.

  • Have a backup plan: Even with the best communication, mix-ups can happen. Keep some emergency snacks like raw nuts or a protein bar in your desk drawer, just in case.

Remember, most people are willing to accommodate dietary needs when they understand the situation. Your polite persistence not only ensures you're well-fed during meetings but also raises awareness about raw food diets in your workplace.

Tip #6: Be Prepared

While it's great when accommodations are made, it's always best to bring your own food when possible. This way, you're guaranteed to have something that aligns with your dietary choices and is truly satisfying.

Leverage your meal prep skills here - pack a variety of pre-chopped veggies, homemade dips, and maybe even a jar of that delicious chia pudding you made with your homemade almond milk.

Lead by Example

Remember, you're not just nourishing your body; you're potentially inspiring an entire office. By confidently embracing your raw food lifestyle at work, you're demonstrating to co-workers that it's entirely possible to prioritize health without sacrificing professionalism or social connections.

As your improved health and vitality become increasingly apparent - through your glowing skin, sustained energy levels, or ability to go a year without calling in sick - don't be surprised if colleagues start asking about your "secret." This is your opportunity to share your experience with enthusiasm and compassion, without pressure.

By consistently choosing raw, plant-based options at work functions or during lunch breaks, you're normalizing healthy eating in your office environment.

Consider suggesting inclusive restaurants for team lunches that cater to various dietary needs, not just raw vegan.

As your influence grows, you might even start a healthy lunch group or healthy recipe exchange with like-minded colleagues.

Remember, your commitment to raw, plant-based eating at the office is a powerful statement that health and career success are deeply interconnected. You're not just changing your own life – you're planting seeds of wellness that can transform your entire workplace culture.

Conclusion

Maintaining a raw food diet in an office environment is absolutely achievable. With these strategies, you can stay true to your health goals while fostering positive relationships with your coworkers.

You might even inspire a plant-based revolution in your workplace!
